Fumiyuki (Fumy) Beppu was first introduced to the sport of cycling in 1990, at a tender age of 7, after a family friend had made the 20km journey to visit his home by mountain bike. Fumy's father, inspired by his friends accomplishment, decided that cycling would be a sport that his whole family would enjoy.
In the same year, Fumy's eldest brother, Hajime, upon watching the World Cycling Championships Road Race on TV, which was taking place in nearby Utsunomiya, was so inspired by the race that he decided to enter bicycle races. Hajime soon joined "Watanabe Racing Cycle" cycling club named after the store owned by Tsutomu Watanabe who was also a professional keirin racer at that time. Watanabe was able to inspire and pass on the enjoyment of the sport to Fumy and his brothers.
In 1991, at the age of 9, Fumy entered his first bicycle race which was a mountain bike race along with his brothers. Fumy managed to finish in 15th place in the elementary school category and had his first taste of competition.
In 1994, at the age of 11, he had his first hand at road racing and won the elementary school category by beating students much older than himself. From that point, Fumy had a string of more than 20 consecutive victories in both road and mountain bike events before graduating junior high school. It was from this period on that Fumy had aspirations of becoming a professional cyclist in Europe.
In the same period, Fumy excelled to the highest category in mountain biking and continued to excel on the road. Japan started to have high hopes for this promising young rider.
Meanwhile, Fumy's other brother, Takumi was enjoying his own successes in the sport and started to race in France when he joined "Team Nippo". Fumy was determined to follow in his brother's footprints.
At the age of 15, just in his first year of high school, Fumy placed second in the National High School Championships. This was followed by victories in the Spring National Invitational High School Bicycle Race in consecutive years.
The following year, at age of 16, Fumy travelled to Canada where he competed in the Tour de l'Abitibi during his summer holiday. This was the first time he raced abroad and experienced international competition. He fared well against his international rivals which gave him the much needed confidence to continue in his pursuit of his dream. Later that year, he competed and finished in the World Championships held in France.
Fumy's successes continued into the following year, when he won the Japanese National High School Championships, and was also given the Best Asian Racer title. He concluded by competing and finishing in another World Championship this time held in Portugal.
Upon graduating from high school, he was given the opportunity to ride on a top Japanese team "Bridgestone Anchor". In order to prepare Fumy for European races, the team had sent him to ride with the top level French amateur club "Velo Club La Pomme Marseille". In the subsequent three year period, Fumy continued to race in Europe in top U23 events and would finish 13th in Paris-Roubaix Espoirs at the age of 19.
In his third year with the French team, Fumy continued to amass many high placings. It wasn't until late in August, when he finally won his first international race when he took the first stage of Giro della Valle d'Aosta. Fumy was then selected to participate in the World Championships (U23) for his third consecutive year.
(Results: 2002 Belgium - 43rd with main group, 2003 Canada - 24th. 2004 Italy, mechanical problems during the race, but finished 29th)
For 2005, Fumy is a member of the UCI Pro Tour professional cycling team "Discovery Channel".
